ACTION TIPS SEPTEMBER 2009

The fish in the water is silent, the animal on the earth is noisy, the bird in the air is singing. But man has in him the silence of the sea, the noise of the earth and the music of the air.

- Rabindranath Tagore

Speak out for the fish.

Like Dr. Seuss' Lorax who spoke for the trees, you can help speak for the fish and our seas! Take action today, and help make the way for healthier oceans for our children someday!

seas the day by showing friends and family your blue side. Do the people around you know just how much you care for the oceans and the environment? At your next gathering, share some things that you have done to be a little more eco-friendly. Remember though, keep it light, fun, and friendly — nobody likes an eco-bully! You can also share your love for the ocean by submitting your favorite photograph to the new Ocean Picture of the Day and then sharing this site with your network of friends.

seas the day by supporting those who also make a difference. A little praise can go a long way. If you feel that there is a an individual, a government official, an organization, or a company that stands out as a conservation leader let them know through a simple thank you e-mail or a letter to your local paper’s editor. Positive feedback helps people know that others appreciate what they are doing, and will help encourage them to continue making a difference. Get some other ideas here.

seas the day by getting active on overarching policy issues. Behind every successful movement there are people just like you who take the time to speak out at public hearings or submit written comments to public officials. In the United States, for example, there are right now a series of critically important public hearings where you can make your voice count! At these types of forums your participation in person or submission of comments online does make a huge difference! Wherever you live, you can bring the ocean issues most important to you to the attention of our leaders.
