Fight Global Warming Now: The Handbook for Taking Action in Your Community
by Bill McKibben
Fight Global Warming Now is a practical book for those who are just beginning to learn about Global Warming and for those who are are already active in promoting awareness on-line and in their community. 2007 was a landmark year in the movement to stop global warming, a year when tens of thousands came together in communities across North America to voice one powerful message. In November 2007, those voices came together under 1 Sky to present policy leaders with the climate solutions that science and justice demand. They suggest it's up to all of us keep this movement moving. This book presents ideas for you to get involved personally.
Bill Mckibben, with help from students, provide initial chapters that give a clear and persuasive explanation of what is causing climate change and the impact these changes are likely to have in the future. Then the remainder of the book offers specific and helpful advise to those who want to do something active in response to curb any potential crises. The book works well as a case study in how the "Step It Up" campaign began, how to operate on a shoestring budget with a few organizers and a short timeframe. (The Step It Up campaign is a public awareness effort at the grass roots level to convince congress to pass laws to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by the year 2050.).
To consider the impact of the "Step It Up" campaign, visit 350.org before, during, or after reading Fight Global Warming Now to check out what's been happening recently in the global grassroots movement to fight global warming. And be sure to focus some attention on the role of our ocean in managing global climate change!
As 350.org suggests:
October 24th, 2009 was called "the most widespread day of political action in the planet's history," with more than 5200 events in 181 countries. We increased pressure throughout the Copenhagen climate talks: we lobbied inside, we protested outside, and we organized thousands of candlelight vigils with partners around the world.
Reconnect yourself vicariously so you can help future generations reconnect with the astonishing variety of phenomena they can experience within earshot of the ocean.
