The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal. Your interest in The Ocean Project is much appreciated and your contribution helps considerably! |

What is “Ocean-Friendly” Paper?
The Ocean Project is conscious of where our products come from and how they were produced. We are pleased to let you know that we use only 100% “ocean-friendly” paper for the Seas the Day calendars, bookmarks, and our other paper products and publications.
“Ocean-friendly” simply means that the paper production process does not harm the environment or our blue backyard - the ocean.
- We use 100% post-consumer recycled paper that contains materials that have already been used at least once and then recycled; in other words, no additional trees had to be cut down to produce our products. Unfortunately most paper labeled “recycled” on the market is actually mainly composed of woods chips and paper mill scraps and contains little post-consumer waste.
Compared to copy paper made from 100% virgin forest fiber, a copy paper made from 100% PCW recycled content reduces:
- total energy consumption by 44%
- net greenhouse gas emissions by 38%
- particulate emissions by 41%
- wastewater by 50%
- solid waste by 49%
- wood use by 100%
(Source: Environmental Defense Paper Calculator and The Green Line Paper Company).
- During the printing process, we use safe vegetable-based inks, not harsh chemicals and environmentally-damaging bleaches and dyes.
- We use non-chlorine bleached paper as chlorine bleaching is a major source of river pollution that eventually makes its way to the ocean.
- For printing our Seas the Day calendars and bookmarks we use Hemlock, a Forest Stewardship Council certified environmentally and socially responsible company based in Canada. By choosing a Canadian based company versus a more distant company we save on transportation related global warming pollution. We invite you to read about Hemlock’s environmental commitment.
Why Do We Use Ocean-Friendly Paper?
Behind every brand new, stark white sheet of paper is a lot of muck that pollutes the environment and our ocean and that is bad for our health. The pulp, paper, and paper product industry is actually one of the largest and most environmentally damaging industries in the world - in fact, it is the third most environmentally polluting industry in North America!
Deforestation - Millions of acres of virgin forests must be cut down to provide the wood that new paper is made of.
Global Warming Pollution - Pulp, paper, and paperboard mills account for 95% of energy use in the U.S. paper and allied products industry and about 12% of total manufacturing energy use in the US (American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy). That’s a lot of energy and global warming pollution that is harmful to the environment and our ocean.
Water pollution – Paper manufacturing requires tons of freshwater and produces heated and chemically loaded effluent that is returned to the environment. This results in the degradation and pollution of nearby and downstream rivers and lakes, and eventually, the ocean.
The use of chlorine is especially problematic. Bleaching paper with chlorine releases dioxins into the air, water, and land. Dioxins are highly carcinogenic, linked to a number of health disorders and deformities, and do not break down well in the environment.
Air pollution - Pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxides and particulates; which contribute to ozone warnings, acid rain, global warming and respiratory problems; are released into the atmosphere during the paper production process. In addition, many mills are large enough to have their own coal-fired power plants, which raises additional concerns about mercury, arsenic and radioactive emissions.
You Can Use Ocean-friendly Paper Too!
When shopping for paper, look for the following characteristics:
- 90 - 100% PCW (post consumer waste) content.
It is not enough to look for the recycled logo; remember most “recycled” paper on the market is actually mainly composed of woods chips and mill scraps. The U.S. Environmental Projection Agency (EPA), for example, only requires paper to contain 30% of PCW to be labeled “recycled.” To be beneficial to forests, landfills, and the environment, recycled paper should be composed of 90% - 100% PCW.
- Non-bleached paper, or paper bleached in a chlorine free process such as oxygen bleaching, and manufactured in a closed loop system (i.e. full effluent recycling) to minimize harmful waste.
- Paper sourced from ecologically managed plantations or made from alternative fibers - such as hemp, kenaf, bagasse, wheatstraw, rice straw, elephant pooh etc.
You can easily buy “ocean-friendly” paper online at The Green Line Paper Company.
