Communicating for conservation: research, strategies, and tools

  • Public opinion research

Understanding what the public knows, thinks, and feels is the foundation for any successful communications strategy about ocean conservation or the environment more generally.

to download the results of The Ocean Project’s comprehensive public opinion survey of Americans and their connections, values, attitudes, and knowledge related to the ocean.

to access an extensive database of other public opinion research about the ocean and the environment more generally.
  • Communication Strategies and Tools

The Ocean Project has developed a three tiered communications framework to increase ocean awareness and education among people who visit aquariums, zoos, and museums based on our public opinion research. This strategy can also be successfully used by conservation organizations.

We have also compiled a database of the best communication websites providing a range of communication strategies to reach the public about the ocean, the environment, and conservation action.

    Seafood Watch Guides
    - The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s convenient wallet sized guides will help your visitors and members choose seafood from your local market or restaurant that is good to eat and good for the ocean. If you'd like to distribute pocket guides to your visitors or members contact us. Supplies are free.

41pounds.org postcards - The average American receives 41 pounds of junk mail in their inbox each year. 41pounds.org does all the leg work to eliminate junk mail for their subscribers. Partners can distribute these postcards to their visitors and members as an easy and self beneficial option for them to save trees, watersheds, and of course the ocean.  Contact us about receiving some. Postcards are free and distribution helps fund The Ocean Project’s work.

Tabletop Display - Below is a photo of our compact four-by-six foot tabletop unit. The display is easily shipped, so contact us if you'd like to borrow it for a special event.
