Island of the Aunts
By Eva Ibbotson
Just in time for the holiday gift season, be sure to check out Island of the Aunts , a magical adventure filled with a great environmental message for kids of all ages to take to heart. It's a really hard job to take care of an entire island and its needy, often magical inhabitants and visitors. The island's caregivers, Aunt Myrtle, Aunt Etta, and Aunt Coral, decide to kidnap three children from London to help them out with their vital work!
The children must help with such important jobs as cleaning up mermaids who were caught in a nasty oil slick and coaxing a stubborn seabird to lay its enormous eggs. Two of the kids, ten year olds Minette and Fabio, grow to love the island and its creatures and are enthusiastic about their charges, but Lambert Sprott is a technology-addicted spoiled brat. It's Lambert's own dastardly father who almost gets away with exploiting the island's own magical creatures for his own selfish gain!
Will Minette, Fabio, and the Aunts be able to help the Kraken and his son save the island from egotistical, polluting villains? Of course they will, but this story contains so much suspense that you won't be able to put it down until you're sure that the magical island is safe.
Island of the Aunts is a wonderfully adventurous read, but also importantly, it contains an environmental message that ocean lovers everywhere will take to heart. With carefully crafted humor and suspense, Island of the Aunts demonstrates the importance of protecting our most valuable resource from people who wish to exploit it for their own gain.
This story will help instill to a lifelong environmental ethic in children, as well as a reminder to all of us of the unknown wonders of the ocean. This holiday season, why not take the time to bring our ocean to the forefront of your thoughts by using this book to conjure up the mysteries of the deep and a sense of protectiveness towards one of our planet's most valuable resources?
