Creating a Climate for Change: Communicating Climate Change and Facilitating Social Change
Edited by Susanne C. Moser and Lisa Dilling
Creating a Climate for Change: Communicating Climate Change and Facilitating Social Change presents a much-needed collection of essays on climate change. In this day and age, it is becoming ever more apparent that the need for effective communication, public outreach, and education to increase support for environmental issues is more pressing now than it ever has been. Significant changes are needed soon, in the spheres of policy, collective action, and behavior change, with one of the most urgent needs found in the context of anthropogenic climate change. The ocean is a key part of our planet's climate, and our future, and all efforts to protect our climate will result in benefits to our ocean. Creating a Climate for Change is the first book to take a comprehensive look at communication and social change specifically targeted to climate change. It is a collection of ideas which examine the challenges associated with effectively and efficiently communicating the issues surrounding climate change in order to facilitate societal response. Creating a Climate for Change brings together climate change, communication, and social change all in one volume and complements the body of ocean communications research conducted by The Ocean Project several years ago.
This book offers well-founded, practical suggestions on how to effectively communicate climate change and how to approach related social change more efficiently, presented through a variety of thought-provoking essays. The contributors to this book come from a wide range of backgrounds, from government and academia to non-governmental and civic sectors of society.
Creating a Climate for Change is divided into three parts: “Communicating Climate Change,” “Facilitating Social Change,” and “Creating a Climate for Change.” Each section contains numerous essays on a variety of topics related to climate change and the challenges we face in trying to effectively present its reality to the public, from “the risk of neglecting emotional responses to climate change information” and “public scares” to “Stuck in the slow lane of behavior change? A not-so superhuman perspective on getting out of our cars” and “States leading the way on climate change action: the view from the northeast.”
Creating a Climate for Change is accessibly written, and any specialized terminology is explained. It will be of great interest to professionals involved with The Ocean Project, including those in climate change, environmental policy, science communication, psychology, sociology, and geography. This book pulls together elements that compose an important dialogue on climate change, and the way forward on effecting societal change. In this day and age this is a book to pay close attention to and utilize in your life and your work.
