South Africa - Save Our Seas Shark Centre, South Africa, Raises Awareness and Celebrates World Ocean Day 2008
Kalk Bay, Cape Province, South Africa (June 6-8, 2008)

In celebration of World Ocean Day 2008, the recently launched Save Our Seas Shark Centre (SOSSC) will be driving a number of events in False Bay, South Africa, over three days in order to raise awareness.

Day 1: Educational outreach trips to the SOSSC for groups of pre-schoolers and teenagers, from both advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds. The ocean is our front garden so we will take the children for a unique experience to the rock pools and give them a lesson on the ocean, as well as provide them with an opportunity to see the wonders below the surface during a snorkeling lesson.

Day 2: We are inviting SCUBA divers, their families and friends for a fun-filled day at Simonstown, Long Beach, during which we will clean up, above and below the water. Sponsored prizes by Reef Wetsuits and Brightweights will be awarded for the most rubbish collected, while other prizes will be hidden amongst the underwater trash.

Day 3: Living with White Sharks on World Ocean Day - Alison Kock, SOSSC Marine Biologist, will give her popular presentation on Great White Sharks in False Bay. The presentation opens with an introduction about World Ocean Day by Lesley Rochat, Manager of SOSSC. After a Q & A session, a screening of the documentary, Sharks in Deep Trouble, produced by Lesley, will conclude the presentation. Thereafter guests are invited to join the Save Our Seas Shark Centre team for a barbecue to celebrate World Ocean Day. Our experienced PR and Marketing department will ensure media exposure for all the events in order to maximise our reach and success in raising awareness about our oceans on World Ocean Day.

Philippines - Lawig 4
Davao City, Philippines (May 16th, 2008)

Lawig 4: A DCWD and partner organization`s collaborative Ocean Month celebration

The UN General Assembly declared the year 1998 as the International Year of the Ocean, which provided a window of opportunity for governments, organizations, and individuals to become aware of the ocean and to consider the actions needed to undertake common responsibility to sustain the greatest common heritage we have.

In response to this, then President Joseph E. Estrada declared every month of May in every year as "The Month of the Ocean" in the Philippines through Presidential Proclamation No. 57 signed on January 9, 1999. Each year government and private agencies are enjoined to conduct activities that highlight the conservation, protection and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and ocean resources.

DCWD`s response

In celebrating truly the ocean month, Davao City Water District through the Public Information / Relations Division launched the first educational coastal tour dubbed as Lawig last May 21, 2004 at Samal Island carrying the national theme: The Philippines, One Vast Sea of Opportunity. Various environmental organizations had been coordinated for the activity that was a success.

Last May 26, 2006, the second coastal tour (Lawig 2) was conducted. At this time, we had sailed the coastline of Davao City from Lasang to Matina Aplaya. Themed Promoting Sustainable Tourism as one Strategy to Conserve Coastal Environments, the activity enjoined all sectors of the society to help curb marine and coastal resources degradation through eco-tourism approach.

Last year, DCWD in its effort to mainstream coastal protection in watershed resources management has continued said project by concretizing the lessons learned from previous activities into action, which is best expressed in mangrove planting to sites identified by the local government as sanctuary and wave prone areas. This time, the planting was done in Purok Malambuon, Kabacan in Brgy. 76-A in partnership with the City Agriculturist - Fisheries Division, Barog Kalikupan, Inc., Office of Leonardo R. Avila III, Davao Gulf Foundation and the Watershed Youth Management Council. Last year`s theme was Living Ocean Saves Life: Let`s Conserve It.

As our continued commitment, PI / RD once again hold this activity to intensify our campaign on ecosystem approach of watershed management. This time, DCWD focuses campaign on the impact of climate change to the environment especially to the coastal resources. This shall involve participation of the members of the Davao Climate Change Action Network coming from the academe, national agencies, local government, non- government organizations, and private sectors.

All about Lawig

Lawig is a vernacular word that means aboard. This word commonly use when it pertains to any activity like sailing and journeying to the sea.

Symbolically, the word Lawig is not just a literal roaming in the vast ocean but rather the heightening, strengthening and intensifying our campaign towards environmental protection specifically watershed preservation, which is basically the purpose of the activity.

Lawig breaks down the paradigm of specialized program care for environmental protection. It embraces the law of nature that says everything is related to everything else and everything must go somewhere. Thus, the term speaks for a comprehensive and ecosystem approach of nurturing the earth because each of the ecosystems significantly affects each other. Hence, we cannot simply dissociate ocean protection from forest preservation. Ocean itself is part of the watershed.

From our end, Lawig simply means a collaborative task in saving the environment from further destruction among agencies both in private or public. This also implies empowerment of the people organizations as the immediate protector of the ecosystems.

England - World Beach Project
worldwide, on any beach or shoreline (June 8, 2008)

Devised by artist Sue Lawty in association with the V&A Museum. The World Beach Project is a global art project open to anybody, anywhere, of any age. Building on the experience many of us have of making patterns on beaches and shorelines, this project combines the simplicity of making patterns with stones, with the complexities of exploring shape, size, colour, tone and composition. The project happens in two stages, in two locations: first, at any beach where you choose the stones and make your pattern, recording the work-in-progress with some photographs along the way. Then later, at a computer, you can upload the photographs to the world map and website at www.vam.ac.uk/worldbeach to complete the project (Full instructions are available at the same web address). Remember, for this project we only want patterns made with stones please, no shells, seaweed or driftwood, and we only want them on beaches and shorelines.

Northern Ireland - Surround Yourself in Sea
Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland (June 8th, 2008)

Immerse yourself in the wildlife of the ocean by visiting one of Northern Ireland's wildest and most exciting places to view the animals that depend on our oceans for survival. Take the 45 minute ferry journey from Ballycastle to the Island (booking is recommended by phoning 028 20769299).

Whilst cruising across the water, keep your eyes peeled for a mysterious and gentle giant, the basking shark and scan the waves for harbour porpoises and bottlenose dolphins. On your approach to Church Bay Harbour, look out for the many seals (hopefully sunning themselves on the shore) and the bright red feet of the black guillemot.

Soak in the atmosphere of the Island by taking the hour and a half walk to the RSPB Rathlin Island Seabird Centre (a minibus operates for the less enthusiastic!), or hire a bicycle. The centre will be open from 11.30am - 4.30pm. Here you can view the largest seabird colony in Northern Ireland, many of whom will be settled on their nests incubating their eggs. The centre is an excellent spot to view the much loved puffin with its big, colourful bill. Finish off your day with some light refreshments in one of the Island's eateries before returning to Ballycastle. Accommodation is also available on Rathlin Island. And don't forget to bring your binoculars!

For more information about visiting Rathlin Island, contact Ballycastle Tourist Information Centre on 028 20762024. For more information on the RSPB Rathlin Island Seabird Centre, contact Alison McFaul on 028 20760062 or visit their website at http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/r/rathlin

Northern Ireland - World Oceans Day - The Coastal Zone, Portrush
Throughout Northern Ireland coast (June 7th and 8th, 2008)

This year, for the first time in Northern Ireland, Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) is joining forces with many other organisations which work on the coast to celebrate World Oceans Day together. A national programme of events around the Northern Ireland coast will involve many partners, including the National Trust, Mourne Heritage Trust, Ulster Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Exploris Aquarium, TIDY Northern Ireland and coastal councils, to name just a few.

Our vision is to kick-start a high profile annual event which engages and inspires people, and makes the most of the public's natural interest in marine life.

EHS will concentrate its celebrations at its flagship marine centre, the Coastal Zone (previously Portrush Countryside Centre) on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June. Marine biologists, seal, seabird and whale and dolphin specialists will meet with the public in a highly interactive two day event.

There will be a strong practical element to the event with demonstrations of EHS research vessels, dive gear and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).

Weather permitting, guided boat trips will take the public out around the coast from Portrush Harbour. EHS guides will interpret the marine life found around the Skerries, Whiterocks and Dunluce castle. For enquiries about guided boat trips or to make a booking, please contact the Coastal Zone directly on 028 7082 3600.

There will also be arts and crafts, face painting and storytelling, all on a marine theme, plus a number of short talks throughout the weekend.

Canada - Fourth Annual Elisabeth Mann Borgese Ocean Lecture
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (June 6th, 2008)

Like in previous years, the International Ocean Institute (IOI-Canada) is organizing the 4th Elisabeth Mann Borgese Ocean Lecture that commemorates and celebrates the life and work of Elisabeth Mann Borgese, founder of the International Ocean Institute and its interdisciplinary Training Programmes.

This public lecture series was launched in 2005 to mark the 25th anniversary of the IOI Training Programme in Ocean Governance in Halifax, NS. The objective is to further encourage the debate on oceans issues which was so dear to Elisabeth, by inviting internationally renowned speakers to discuss important and timely ocean-related topics.

Through this lecture series, we hope to generate awareness among stakeholders, academics, students and the general public about important ocean issues. The 2008 lecture will take place on Friday 6th June at 7.00 p.m.

Dr Elliott A. Norse, President, Marine Conservation Biology Institute, Bellevue, USA will be speaking on "Oceans of Hope: Encouraging Signs in Marine Conservation". The lecture will be held in Room 105, Dalhousie Law School, 6061 University Avenue, Halifax, NS, CANADA and will be followed by a reception.

Synopsis of the Lecture:
Title: Oceans of Hope: Encouraging Signs in Marine Conservation

Except in densely populated places, the marine environment was considered to be less impacted than the land until the 1990s. Now we know differently: Humans have had major impacts on the marine environment for centuries and those impacts have spread and intensified rapidly in recent decades, as documented by scientists at Dalhousie University and elsewhere. Populations of large fish species have been reduced 90% in recent decades; oceanic whitetip sharks in the Gulf of Mexico have declined 99.7% in that interval. Bottom trawling is scouring coral-sponge forests from seafloors around the world as fishermen seek the last ancient deep-sea fishes to please the palates of wealthy people. Human-caused ocean acidification and climate changes threaten species from corals to polar bears. Almost no place in the world's oceans has been unharmed.

But there are important reasons for hope. A strong marine conservation movement has arisen since the 1990s, and nations from Canada to Kiribati are starting to protect key places in the sea. Armed with more powerful tools for studying, analyzing and depicting spatial information, natural and social marine conservation scientists are playing the central role in catalyzing this change.

Ultimately, the fate of the oceans will depend on effective ocean governance, the focus of Elizabeth Mann Borgese's work.

Costa Rica - Costa Rican kids celebrate the World Ocean Day
Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (June 8th, 2008)

The beach communities surrounding Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, collaborated to celebrate World Ocean Day on Sunday 8th June 2008.

A Gigantic, Breathtaking Community Mural (11x4 meters) was brought into being by marine artist Carlos Hiller, with the help of more than seventy local children, (organized by groups of ten, conducted by non-profit children's association Proyecto de Luz). This piece of art has principal subject coralline reefs, to support the celebrations of "The International Year of the Reef" (IYOR).

In addition, Carlos Hiller painted a huge Bull Shark, portraying how beautiful and imposing these wonderful marine inhabitants really are, unjustly feared, and for that reason at the mercy of massive fishing by foreign fishing fleets.

In order to protest the infamous practice of shark fining (by means of which the fins are cut off and the body of the shark is thrown overboard), Stop shark finning! Legend was added, and also the same phrase in Spanish. During the activity, children filled the outlines of marine life around the coral reef and in addition wrote letters and created drawings to send to different governmental institutions, indicating their perceptions, desires and hopes about the importance of protecting the marine environment.

This first Marine awareness mural which embellishes Playas del Coco is part of a Carlos Hiller's national level campaign to encourage different cities and towns simultaneously to educate and make aware the importance of protecting our marine resources.

Hundreds of children and parents united to clean the beaches, build sand sculptures, and experience boat rides. Everyone was eager to learn more about the protection of the marine resources, and at the same time, all enjoying a beautiful day along our shoreline.

USA - World Ocean Day - Southeast Alaska
Juneau, Alaska, USA (6/14/2008 - 6/14/2008)

The 300 mile stretch of ocean that surrounds the over 1000 islands known as the Alexander Archipelago off the rugged coast of Alaska is often referred to as the Southeast Alaska Inside Passage. These ocean waters not only connect the many communities of Southeast Alaska to create a regional community, they also support a great diversity of life and ecosystems, afford some residents a subsistence lifestyle, provide a sustainable means to develop the economy of the area and offer a source of inspiration, recreation, and discovery for all.

Celebrate World Ocean Day the Southeast Alaska way on June 14th at the NOAA Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute at Lena Point in Juneau, Alaska and explore the many connections we all share with our ocean.

The day will bring together a diverse cross-section of groups whose work requires an interconnection with the ocean. Researchers from both governmental and academic institutions, local and national environmental advocacy groups, federal and state regulatory agencies, commercial fishing and seafood processing organizations, and nature education and watershed partnerships will be represented.

World Ocean Day activities will include information tables hosted by local organizations that work directly with ocean and marine issues, educational walks along Lena beach or to Lena point with professional naturalists, film and speaker presentations whose focus is on ocean sciences or other ocean literacy issues, games, touch tanks, educational displays as well as other youth activities.

USA - Nashville Public Television Oceans Festival
Nashville, TN (June 21st, 2008)

The NPT Oceans Festival will be held at Shelby Bottoms Nature Center on June 21, 2008. At the festival, we would promote the idea of "all things are connected". Our lives right here in Nashville, TN has a direct impact on the oceans that surround our continent and indeed the whole planet's oceans because all things truly are connected. Water is the finest example of this concept. Our activities at the festival are taken or adapted from The Oceans Adventures website, Project WET, Project WILD Aquatic, MiZA - Math in Zoos and Aquariums and more.

Nashville Public Television's goal is to use educational resources to bring awareness to ocean issues and how Tennessee plays a part in that. We will focus on increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of ecosystems and develop stewardship through meaningful understanding of the value of the oceans and what they mean to us in Tennessee. Additionally, this festival could inform the residents of this urban neighborhood via fun and interesting activities that they indeed have an impact on our oceans even though many of these residents will never go to the ocean.

USA - Ocean Revolution IV Concert
Santa Cruz, CA, USA (June 14th, 2008)

OCEAN REVOLUTION IV HITS SANTA CRUZ JUNE 14

The fourth annual Ocean Revolution celebration will be held at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz on June 14, to celebrate World Ocean Day. The Mother Hips will be headlining with special guest Matt Butler, starting at 9:30 pm. The event will offer a chance to get up-and-close with local, national and international ocean conservation groups and their leaders, to celebrate the ocean in a rocking atmosphere and to explore ways in which we can all live like we love the ocean.

The event is organized each year by Santa Cruz locals Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, OCEAN REVOLUTION founder and Ocean Conservancy Senior Scientist, and Will Henry, renowned photographer and Save the Waves Coalition founder, who are joined this year by many other ocean activists.

"After four years this celebration is something lots of ocean-loving people look forward to. There's no better place to celebrate World Ocean Day than Santa Cruz, the heart of the Ocean Revolution," says Nichols.

"The Mother Hips lead singer and guitarist Tim Bluhm has proven his ongoing dedication to ocean protection over the past few years," adds Henry.

The band has headlined three out of four OCEAN REVOLUTION shows and also played at the May "Life is a Wave" benefit concert in San Francisco. The event raised over $25,000 for Save the Waves Coalition.

OCEAN REVOLUTION is an international program designed to grow a creative network and inspire a new wave of young leaders, united in their quest for innovative solutions to protect our oceans.

Save the Waves Coalition is a non-profit that works to preserve surf zones internationally, and is based in Davenport.

USA - Friends of Jupiter Beach Volunteer Cleanup
Jupiter, Palm Beach County, Florida (June 7th, 2008)

The Friends of Jupiter Beach are sponsoring a volunteer beach cleanup Saturday, June 7 from 8:00am-10:00am in Jupiter, north Palm Beach County, Florida. The Adopt-A-Spot partner is Solid Waste Authority.

Volunteers arrive at 8:00am at the Anita Lankler Pavilion in Ocean Cay Park, east of US Hwy 1 and Marcinski Road, divide into teams to clean 2 1/2 miles of beach, sidewalks, and park grounds, then regroup at 9:30 am for light continental breakfast and beverages, a brief program and door prizes. Community services hours are awarded. All volunteers are welcome and advance registration is not required. When weather is in doubt, call 561-748-8140 for a "cancel" message.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring recycled shopping bags for use in cleanup efforts, garden gloves, sunscreen and bug spray. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Since September 2006, Friends of Jupiter Beach have been tracking the weight of garbage and recyclables picked up from Jupiter Beach at monthly cleanups, for a total exceeding 11,000 pounds of trash removed from September 2006 - May 2008. More than 5,000 pounds of recyclables have been separated and transferred voluntarily by Rapid Removal, a Palm Beach Gardens firm. Previously, the number of garbage bags collected were recorded, but the change was made to so that observers could fully comprehend the extent of the garbage problem at the beach and, more importantly, the tremendous benefit to the beach, dunes and ocean environment provided by Friends of Jupiter Beach. The offer by Rapid Removal, in fall of 2006, to collect the separated recyclables following each cleanup has resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in the amount of garbage going to landfill.

Friends of Jupiter Beach is a 14-year-old not-for-profit 501(c)3 not for profit organization dedicated to organizing monthly beach cleanups, providing free "dog bags" at the beach, preserving dog-friendly beach privileges and enhancing our beach and marine environment through education and community service... along a 2 1/2 mile stretch of historically dog-friendly shoreline.

USA - Mermaid Press Conference
St. Louis, MO (06/08/2008)

On World Ocean Day, the World Aquarium located in St. Louis had a great outcome. There were about 100 guests to come to the event and taste our sustainable seafood while seeing a live mermaid. Ther mermaid made a very informational speech, which is copied below. Mermaid: Hi. I am the Mermaid from the sea. My family and I have lived in the ocean for many years. I am here on land to talk to you today about my living experience in the ocean. As each day passes I notice how the ocean is getting more and more harmful to me and my family. I have seen many species of fish die from toxic substances that humans dump into the ocean such as oil, trash and other chemicals. It is a terrible thought to know that me or any of my relatives could die at any given moment from what comes from the land dwellers such as yourselves. So I am here today, World Ocean Day, to speak out to you and ask you to become more concerned about how you treat the ocean and the environment in which you live. You need the ocean just as much as the ocean needs you. So please, live more sustainably and be more respectful to yourselves and to the environment around you by ways such as eating sustainable sea foods like catfish, clams, oysters, tilapia, and trout. Or even other small things such as turning lights out or replacing your bulbs with compact florescent bulbs, using less gas, and by adjusting your thermostats, warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. I hope you take these things in consideration and help save me, my family in the ocean, and yourselves.

This public lecture series was launched in 2005 to mark the 25th anniversary of the IOI Training Programme in Halifax. The keynote speaker for 2007 will be Dr Kathleen Conlan, Research Scientist with the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. She will lecture on UNDER THE POLAR ICE: DIVERSITY, DISTURBANCE AND CLIMATE CHANGE at 7.00 p.m. on World Oceans Day, 8th June in Room 105, Dalhousie Law School, 6061 University Avenue. This illustrated public talk is open to everyone, and will be followed by a reception. Lecture Outline: For polar marine life, sea ice is a seasonal platform that can act as insulator, highway, prison, sunscreen, pollutant collector, drinking water, food supply, sanctuary, lake shore, and plough. Dr Conlan will give an underwater tour showing how marine life uses the sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic and will explore the threats of climate warming. She will show what her research on the ecology of disturbance has demonstrated about polar adaptations. She will also reveal new under-ice discoveries that acoustic technology is making possible, and demonstrate the amazing diversity of life that is within a diver's reach in the Antarctic.

Help Dolphy Save our Seas June 8th, 2007
Amy Jones a nine year old little girl has written a book about a dolphin, along with his friends Wave and Surf who go out to save the seas from litter and debris. We have been trying to get publishers or printers to help us get Amy`s story in book form and on the shelves of book shops, no one has offered to help. Dolphin Care UK and the Marine Conservation Society are backing Amy and her book, she is a remarkable little girl. We have chosen World Ocean Day to release Amy`s story as an e-book, the book is also illustrated and well set out. Everyone should read this story, it is fantastic and for a small fee it can be downloaded and all proceeds are going to the charity Marine Conservation Society, Amy has asked nothing for herself, she just loves dolphins and wonders why anyone can hurt them. You can see more about Amy on our website or the website of the UN's Year of the Dolphin.
