South Africa - World Ocean Day - Unity for Diversity
Hermanus, South Africa (06/08/10 - 06/08/10)

On Tuesday, June 8th 2010, the World will celebrate World Oceans Day. Originally proposed as a concept by Canada at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, World Oceans Day was officially declared by the UN in 1999 and is now celebrated annually across the globe. On the first World Oceans Day, the Secretary General of the UN declared:
"The first observance of World Oceans Day allows us to highlight the many ways in which oceans contribute to society. It is also an opportunity to recognize the considerable challenges we face in maintaining their capacity to regulate the global climate, supply essential ecosystem services and provide sustainable livelihoods and safe recreation..."

Indeed, human activities are taking a terrible toll on the world's oceans and seas. Vulnerable marine ecosystems, such as corals, and important fisheries are being damaged by over-exploitation, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, destructive fishing practices, invasive alien species and marine pollution, especially from land-based sources. Increased sea temperatures, sea-level rise and ocean acidification caused by climate change pose a further threat to marine life, coastal and island communities and national economies...

The theme of World Oceans Day... emphasizes our individual and collective duty to protect the marine environment and carefully manage its resources. Safe, healthy and productive seas and oceans are integral to human well-being, economic security and sustainable development"
World Oceans Day gives us all the opportunity to celebrate and honour our Blue Planet. This year's theme, Oceans of Life, celebrates the incredible diversity found from the shallows to the depths of these magnificent ecosystems.

To honour our Oceans on this day and highlight conservation issues, SASC proposes to join with our partners and friends here in Hermanus — uniting as one for the sake of diversity.

Some of the activities on the day will include:
  1. A beach cleanup at Grotto Beach, where all participants dress in their best marine creature costume to illustrate the diversity of ocean life;
  2. Unity for Ocean Diversity walk: with collected litter, costumed participants walk from Grotto to the Old Harbour and create a life-size litter collage of an endangered whale shark;
  3. Prominent guest speakers will highlight conservation issues and actions;
  4. Screening of ocean related films
  5. A community-wide pledge to take action and conserve our oceans;
  6. Best-dressed prizes, etc.
However, to undertake our Unity for Ocean Diversity project, we require significant assistance through the donation of funds, materials and prizes. Those who are interested in participating or assisting in any way will be recognised through various media, including the SASC website, local television and news.

All donations, however small or grand, are tax deductible — and don't forget how great you will feel knowing you have contributed to ocean conservation!!

To get involved, contact Tamzyn (tamzyn@sharkconservancy.org) or myself (meag@sharkconservancy.org) for more info.

South Africa - South Africa - Ocean Education
Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa (June 8th, 2010)

In honour of World Oceans Day, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust will hold interactive presentations at Gansbaai, Junior Primary — Western Cape, South Africa.

The goal is to educate the youth on the valuable part in the ecosystem that the ocean plays and to focus on the unique area that exists here at the southernmost tip of Africa.

The two currents that meet here, the cold Benguela and the warm Agulhas create a rich upwelling that provides a nutrient rich feeding ground.

Here you will find the Marine Big 5™ — the Southern Right Whale; the Great White Shark; the Endangered African Penguin; the Cape Fur Seal and Dolphins.

We will teach the children how an ocean food web works and how they can make a difference in preserving our oceans. They will be encouraged to make a personal commitment to do so. We will continue this theme during our National Marine Week 11-15 October 2010 and broaden the reach to our other local schools in the area.

Dyer Island Conservation Trust delivers unique conservation and research programmes in the fragile and critically important marine eco-system at the southern-most tip of Africa. Here we strive to protect the largest surviving colonies of the endangered African Penguin; the globally important breeding and calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale; and, one of the world’s largest populations of the mysterious Great White Shark.

South Africa - Celebrate World Oceans Day with SAIAB AND ASCLME
Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa (June 8th, 2010)

ASCLME Project Director, Dr David Vousden will introduce a film entitled "Rivers of Life, Oceans of Plenty" that showcases the work of the ASCLME Project. The video describes the unique marine and coastal ecosystems of the western Indian Ocean and documents the ways in which they are changing. It shows how over-fishing, the destruction of critical habitats such as coastal forests, mangrove forests, seagrass beds and coral reefs and global climate change are leading to a decline in the abundance of resources and what can be done to reverse this trend.

Coral Sea Dreaming — Awaken enters into the very heart of life — and death — on a coral reef. It is a story that spans 500 million years and stars some of the most exotic and wondrous marine creatures on earth. Coral is the planets greatest natural architect, and coral reefs boast the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem.

Emmy Award-winning cinematographer David Hannan has filmed for 7 years to create this magnificent testimony to our extraordinary undersea world, set to an original score by Tania Rose. We meet thousands of reef inhabitants, from ancient turtles to feeding sharks, adorably pygmy seahorses and savage sea slugs, witness a manta ray ballet and courting octopus.

Specialised state-of-the-art High Definition technology captures these lives with unprecedented intimacy, illustrating elaborate courtship displays, mating rituals, feeding frenzies, intense nighttime predation, cannibalism and chemical warfare. Many of the sequences have never been filmed before. Some may never be filmed again. Corals have survived 5 mass extinctions. But can they survive us?

Filmed over 2000 dives on three great coral reef ecosystems; The Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo Reef and Papua New Guinea, Coral Sea Dreaming – Awaken is a celebration of reefs now under threat of climate change and ocean acidification. There is much to be done to safeguard these precious ecosystems for future generations. And very little time to do it.

Germany - Stop the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico - Save Our Oceans
Munich, Bavaria, Germany (June 8th, 2010)

Public rally with the subject:

OPERATION "TOP MEETING"
"Stop the Oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico - Save our Oceans"

Date: Tuesday, June 8th 2010, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM

Location: Marienplatz, Munich, Germany

April 20th 2010, the exact date of the internationally celebrated EARTH DAY, the oil platform "Deepwater Horizon" owned by BP (British Petroleum) explodes, sinks into the depths of the ocean, kills 11 humans and destroys the deep-sea pipes on several points in 5000 feet under the sea.

Ever since then, enormous amounts of oil have been gushing into the Gulf of Mexico contaminating the water, the surrounding shores, the population and everybody in the area. Marine animals and birds suffer horrendous pains and eventually being killed in the most excruciating ways, due to the consequences of this pollution.

It is not only the oil causing the damage, but possibly and, in particular, the hundreds of thousands of gallons of the highly toxic dispersant COREXIT 9500, which are most likely the ingredients causing the extermination of the ecosystem for many decades to come. The COREXIT 9500 is designed to invisibly disperse the oil into the water column. This has at best only served as a "cosmetic" solution.

FIGHT POISON WITH POISON?

Day 37 (Thursday, 05-27-2010):
Oil: 62,000,000 Gallons (235,600,000 Liters)
Dispersants: 875,000 Gallons (3,325,000 Liters)

Day 40 (Saturday, 05-29-2010):
Dispersants: 910,000 Gallons (3,458,000 Liters)

Oceanographer Jean-Michel Cousteau (Ocean Futures Society) was on location of the disaster and according to his findings and the research of many other experts, they all make us understand that "Everything will die and even kill the food chain"!

The scope and impact of this catastrophe is the largest ever caused by human mistake in the history of the United States of America, if not the largest in the entire world; already now, the volume has surpassed a quantity of more than eight times the oil spilled during the disaster of 1979 caused by the oil tanker EXXON Valdez off the coasts of Alaska.

The time is more than due, we ALL should have acted from day ONE to fight this pollution, because we ALL, not only the United States will now suffer from the consequences and impact of this largest environmental catastrophe on planet earth.

We invite everybody to join this urgent gathering!

With this event, honoring the World Oceans Day, we would like to exceptionally address the president of the United States of America, Mr. Barack OBAMA, to seek the initiation of immediate, massive and sufficient procedures, not to let any opportunity pass by and to accept the help and support of all other countries on earth. It does not matter WHO helps, all that matters is, that it HELPS!

Not only the US will suffer from the consequences of this oil disaster, but looking at the long-term effects, it will affect all of us. The polluting of the oceans in such a massive amount and degree, devastates not only the tourist industry, local businesses and thousands of others, but mainly destroys the trust and respect into politics and the manners of dealing with the oil industry.

We ask you to please join us all.

The location is the "Marienplatz" which can hold up to 5000 people, we look forward to at least 4999.

This rally shall not encourage any violence or tumults whatsoever, we insist on a peaceful gathering with creative results and enormous effects.

WE WANT OIL OFF!

USA - Plastic Bottle Art Installation
Arcata, California (June 8th, 2010)

Upcoming Marine Debris Art Installation at Arcata Elementary School

On World Oceans Day thousands of plastic bottles, hundreds of kids, and many student-made life-sized marine animals will assemble into a simulation of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch on the Arcata Elementary School campus. This art installation on the school playground is intended to build awareness of the growing environmental concern of marine debris. Funded by the California Coastal Commission's Whale Tail License Plate Fund Grant Program, AES students have been learning about the environmental impact of marine debris as pollutants on our beaches and in our waterways, and the effects of plastics concentrated in the North Pacific Gyre. As part of this project, students collected plastic bottles and containers for a two-month period and strung them together in long strands. These strands of plastics will be arranged in a swirling pattern symbolizing the movement of oceanic currents that are collecting and aggregating plastic debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Two-dimensional marine animals will be arranged among the strands to alert the viewer of the threat posed to all marine animals by plastic pollutants.

The art installation is the culminating piece of the "Seeing the Sea and Marine Debris" education program and will be assembled for one day only: Tuesday, June 8. Assembly will begin in the morning and complete by noon. The installation will be photographed from above at 1:15 p.m. with all students present at that time.

USA - Beach trash...A Whale of a Problem!
Carlsbad, California (09-01-2009 - 06-08-2010)

First graders and their families from Jefferson Elementary School in Carlsbad, California will collect beach trash. They will recycle what can be recycled. All plastic objects will be saved. They will work with artist and environmentalist, Teresa Espaniola, to glue the plastic objects to a life-sized wall hanging collage of a gray whale.

After the whale has been unveiled and dedicated, the whale will go to Legoland in Carlsbad California. They will display it so that our message about the problem of beach trash will reach a larger audience.

Our goal is to get 1,000 people to sign a promise to pick up trash at the beach. Participants will sign a recycled 35-inch sail that donated by the friends at The Southwestern Yacht Club in Pt. Loma, California.

In celebration of World Oceans Day, Artist Halsey Burgund will debut his composition at Nightlife on June 3, 2010. Showtimes are 7:30 and 8:30pm.

-What does it feel like to be in the ocean?
-How does the ocean affect you on a daily basis?
-Describe a world without oceans.

The Ocean Voices project collects responses to these and other questions posed to people around the world, in order to document the impact oceans have on daily lives.

The Ocean Voices project aims to open minds and expand awareness about the world's oceans by recording narratives from around the world and weaving them into a collective musical work.

Why: This audio-visual performance will honor World Oceans Day, and the 100th anniversary of Jacques Cousteau's birthday.

Time: June 3, 2010 — 7:30 and 8:30 pm.

Where: The Academy's weekly NightLife event, an after-hours program that combines music, cocktails, and science every Thursday night.

Who: Two of Jacques Cousteau's grandchildren — Fabien and Celine Cousteau — will speak before each performance on this important conservation work. Halsey Burgund will perform the musical piece with his group, aesthetic evidence.

A Collection of Voices

The voices are being collected via in person interviews, an interactive website (oceanvoices.org), and cell phone tours at the California Academy of Sciences. As the voices are collected, they will be consolidated in an online database, which participants will be able to access on a Google map as well as in the form of algorithmically generated audio collages.

These collages will present a user-selected group of voices in a non-linear, semi-randomized fashion that will not only give each participant a unique audio experience, but will also help them hear the thoughts of many other individuals in a musical setting.

The collages will be accessible online, which will help spread the voices around the globe.

As more voices are collected, the collages will become more and more varied.

http://www.oceanvoices.org

These recordings will act as the raw material for a related musical work – a semi-improvised, semi-composed piece by Halsey Burgund, which will debut at the California Academy of Sciences on June 3, 2010.

The voice recordings will not only act as inspiration from a content standpoint, but will be used in combination with acoustic and electronic instruments in the composition itself.

This musical performance will be staged by Burgund and his band, aesthetic evidence, in the Academy's state-of-the-art Morrison Planetarium dome. It will also include projected visuals, which will be tightly woven into the musical and vocal fabric.

USA - Ocean Conservation Days
Gainesville, FL (June 5-6, 2010)

The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo will take a different perspective when celebrating World Ocean Day on June 5 and June 6.

While many might look at how we can help our oceans with regard to climate change, excess fishing and oil spills, the Teaching Zoo will look at how we can protect our oceans without ever leaving home. With this in mind, the zoo has set up displays and discussions about what we can do to help.

"We want to inspire conservation action," said Tarah Jacobs, zoo education specialist. "Much of what we create inland eventually finds its way to the sea, so the idea of protecting our oceans from home makes sense."

Inside the Teaching Zoo's conservation pavilion a discussion will be held on sustainable seafood choices. The information is based on Seafood Watch, a program started by the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 1999.

There will also be children's crafts and activities like being a sea turtle researcher, where the child will discover the sea turtle's nest, and then log the number of eggs found. Santa Fe students will give demonstrations on how zookeepers work with and train animals, and how water is a vital part of their interactions.

Unlike the usual guided tours, zookeepers will be stationed at the exhibits so that visitors can wander the zoo at their leisure and still have access to detailed information about the animals.

Admission
The special event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Admission for adults is $5, children, $4, and SF students, staff and children under 4 are free. Please call the Teaching Zoo if you need more information, 352-395-5601.

USA - World Oceans Day
(June 8th, 2010)

WHAT: Florida Oceanographic Society is proud to join hundreds of other educational institutions, conservation organizations, and thousands of individuals in dozens of countries around the world to celebrate our shared ocean. World Oceans Day — held on June 8th of each year — is an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea.

To celebrate Florida Oceanographic Society encourages everyone to wear blue and tell two on Tuesday, June 8th.

WHEN: June 8, 2010

WHERE: ANYWHERE!

WHY: We can help make others more aware of the importance of the world's ocean in their daily lives by showing them ways to improve their impact on the ocean by, for example, reducing CO2 emissions. In joining with thousands of people all over the world in celebrating World Oceans Day, we can make a real difference for our oceans of life!

HOW: The main idea behind "Wear Blue and Tell Two" is to have people associate the color blue with World Oceans Day each year. We also are interested in helping each person multiply their positive reach by telling friends or colleagues two interesting facts about the ocean or ways one can take take personal action to help.

We urge you to spread the word about Wear Blue and Tell Two as a fun and easy way to help make a difference!

To make the "tell two" part a little easier, here are two messages you can share:
  • Our ocean has a great wealth of diverse kinds of life but it's in trouble. Climate change has already been linked to the killing of coral reefs. Coupled with destructive fishing practices, there is a dramatic decline in many types of fish and sea life we depend on.
  • There are important, easy actions each of us can take to help. Calculating our carbon footprints and looking for ways to reduce our role in climate change is a great step. Likewise, we can choose seafood that is abundant in supply and fished or farmed without harm to the ocean and coasts.
  • In further efforts to continue the importance of World Oceans Day, Florida Oceanographic Society collected over 200 names on a petition placed in the Visitor's Center to encourage the Martin County Board of County Commissioners to proclaim the month of June as "World Oceans Month".

Florida Oceanographic Society's mission is to inspire environmental stewardship of Florida's coastal ecosystems through education and research. In sticking with their mission, Florida Oceanographic posted a petition for every visitor, member and staff to sign in support of turning June into World Oceans Month. The petition was unveiled on Earth Day and presented to the Martin County Board of Commissioners on June 8. The county officially proclaimed June as World Ocean's Month on June 15.

"We must start close to home, and we must stand together in our commitment to inspire environmental stewardship of Florida's coastal ecosystems. We can help make others more aware of the importance of the world's ocean in their daily lives by showing them ways to improve their impact on the ocean," encourages Mark Perry, Executive Director of Florida Oceanographic. In joining with thousands of people all over the world in celebrating June as World Oceans Month, we can make a real difference for our oceans of life!

Florida Oceanographic Society's teaching and programming is designed to change the generational views of how we care for and preserve our unique environments. For more information on how you can make a positive impact on our ocean, please contact Florida Oceanographic Society at (772) 225-0505 or visit www.FloridaOceanographic.org.

It is positive, solutions focused, viral and fun.

After the film, you will have an opportunity to envision for yourself what a more resilient Sarasota might look, taste, and feel like. There will also be time to share this vision with others and brainstorm first steps towards its realization.

USA - Celebrate World Ocean Day - Train for the Great Annual Fish Count!
Waikiki Aquarium (June 8th, 2010)

To participate in the Great Annual Fish Count, you must first attend a REEF fish identification training class. The introductory class includes basic coral reef ecology and fish biology, followed by identification tips and specific information about different fish families found in the Hawaiian Islands.

The monitoring program uses a roving survey method developed by the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) that can be conducted with minimal training and basic snorkel gear. During each 30-minute REEF survey, participants record the species and number of fishes observed. Once trained, you can conduct a REEF survey anywhere on O'ahu. Participants who complete this special training class will be provided with a REEF survey slate and data sheets to get started.

No prior experience is required, but volunteers wishing to conduct snorkel surveys should be strong swimmers, competent snorkelers, and have their own mask, snorkel and fins to participate.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Thom Benson 423-785-3007

World Oceans Day Party at the Aquarium with Dr. Seuss's Famous Fish. Celebrate 50 Years of "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" in Chattanooga, Tenn. (May 27, 2010)

The Tennessee Aquarium will celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 5th by tipping our hats to Dr. Seuss to mark the 50th Anniversary of "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish."

"Catfish and starfish, the Aquarium's got guitarfish." Inspired by the theme of diversity in One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Aquarium events scheduled for the World Oceans Day party will teach children how everyday actions impact the ocean and about the importance of protecting the variety of life found within its depths. Children will have Seussational fun getting to know the ocean's creatures with Seussian crafts, tattoos, dive shows and activities in both Aquarium buildings.

"Download and show. Kids will save some dough." Visit the Tennessee Aquarium's website to download a Seuss-Styled scavenger hunt activity sheet. Present the sheet at the Aquarium ticketing center to receive half off child's admission. Offer valid on June 5, 2010 only. http://www.tnaqua.org/PlanYourVisit/worldoceansday.aspx

"Stop by for a look, bring home a free book." The first 3,000 children at the Tennessee Aquarium will receive a FREE Dr. Seuss's "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" activity book and if you dress up as your favorite Dr. Seuss character you may receive a prize! Children will enjoy story time by The Public Library at 10:30, 1:30 and 3:30 in the River Journey Auditorium with free Dr. Seuss bookmarks followed by an interactive oceans program.

"Meet animals by chance - hear music to make you dance." Special Animal Encounter programs will highlight terrestrial animals every hour in both Aquarium buildings. Some will be species that young visitors can touch. Paul Vogler will entertain Aquarium guests with his lively steel drum music. Visitors will be encouraged to "play along" with him, tap toes or dance awhile.

"Below the sea and beyond the stars, IMAX takes me places I can't go in a car." Visitors can save money by adding tickets to Wild Ocean 3D or Hubble 3D for just $5.00 when they purchase an IMAX 3D Theater / Tennessee Aquarium combination ticket.

The Aquarium's World Oceans Day party is planned in cooperation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children's Books and The Ocean Project.

Virginia Beach, Virginia (June 5-8, 2010)

World Oceans Day — The Virginia Aquarium is celebrating the 50th birthday of Dr. Seuss's One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish as part of our World Oceans Day celebration. There's so much fun to have at the Aquarium, we extended our celebration and we'll be partying from June 5th through the 8th.

One Fish, Two Fish Toddler Tuesday — see a special Dr. Seuss-themed puppet show at 11 a.m. at the Marsh Pavilion. The perfect place to read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is surrounded by ocean friends in an aquarium setting.

One Fish, Two Fish, TRUE Fish, Blue Fish Scavenger Hunt — Dr. Seuss came up with some zany names, but did you know that some of the zaniest you will ever hear belong to fishes in the Aquarium? Kids and parents can take a multiple choice quiz that lets them guess the true names of fishes. Something extra fishy will be going on in some of the Aquariums as well. Search and see if you can find those red and blue fish!

Fish Face Painting — Get your face painted to look just like your favorite fish friends: June 5th-8th, 11 a.m. thru 2 p.m. daily

Become King or Queen of the Ocean — Decorate a World Oceans Day crown and be King or Queen of the ocean for the day.

At the end, everyone should give their T-shirt to charity. Every shirt can be sold, raffled, or auctioned and all money raised from the process be used to support ocean-awareness in poor countries.

World Oceans Day Challenge
none (June 8th, 2010)

World Ocean Day Challenge:

To celebrate World Ocean's Day on June 8 2010, Lucid Publishing and the author of The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book propose a CHALLENGE to Do Something Unusual to Help Protect Coral Reefs. You might be surprised that helping protect marine resources could improve your health and even save you money! Choose one of the suggestions from the list provided below and implement it. Then, send this list to as many of your friends that you think are up to the challenge.

1.) Stop Smoking: Chemicals used in the production of tobacco products are not only hazardous to your health but they can also affect the health of the reef. Cigarette butts left in large numbers on beaches can end up in the ocean and these chemicals can leach into the water. Chemicals found in the soil where tobacco grows can also find their way into the ocean via runoff. Save your health, save money and save the environment. If you smoke a pack a day, you could spend around $200 per month on cigarettes. If you donated just a quarter of this money to a reef conservation organization like SAVE OUR SEAS, you could make a substantial contribution to reef conservation and protection efforts, all while saving money and saving your own health.

2.) Plant a Tree: Trees take up carbon dioxide, which contributes to both global warming and ocean acidification. These two phenomena are contributing to the demise of coral reefs. Now don't just plant any old tree. Choose a non-invasive or native variety, or consider planting a nitrogen fixer (eliminating the need to apply fertilizer) or a fruit tree (to feed your family). Trees help increase infiltration and reduce erosion, thereby limiting the amount of chemicals and sediment that enter the ocean that can affect reefs. Choose organic fertilizers or make your own compost if your tree needs a boost.

3.) Go to a Garage Sale or check out Craig's List: The next time you are in need of a new set of dishes, lawn mower, patio furniture or beach chair, check out a garage sale. Chances are what you need, already exists. Buying gently used items is a great way to recycle and you can save money and fuel on shipping. While you are there, pick up some second-hand "Tupperware" to help you cut back on the number of sandwich bags you use.

4.) Vow to Never Buy Bottled Water Again: Instead, get yourself a good filter and a recycled glass or stainless steel bottle to reuse. Plastic from the production of water bottles and caps tends to end up in the ocean. There is already an island of plastic the size of Texas floating around out there. Plastic threatens wildlife by both ingestion and entanglement and the effects of chemicals leaching from the plastics are still unknown. If you buy just one case of water per month for your family, you will go through approximately 250 bottles per year. That's 250 million bottles a year just for the population in Hawaii. Plus, fuel is wasted to ship them. At roughly $6.00 per case, you can save at least $75/year. Just another way to save money while protecting reefs!

5.) If you Wait Tables, Stop Suggesting the Fresh Catch. The demand for certain species of fresh fish is outweighing the supply. Lower numbers are forcing lawmakers to implement "seasons" for certain species like Opakapaka. If you must eat seafood, choose sustainable seafood (learn more at Seafood Watch). If you dine out, order a vegetarian item, grass fed organic beef, or other organically or sustainably produced food. Organically raised food is not only healthier for you but also healthier for the environment. Properly managed grazing fields have good cover to reduce erosion and if there are no chemicals sprayed in the fields, then no chemicals will be entrained in any runoff that may result.

6.) Organize or Attend a Beach Cleanup: Or as an alternative, just pick up excess litter while you are at the beach. This simple activity is often contagious. Try it and see how many people come to help you out.

Lucid Publishing is a small publishing house dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting the responsible use of resources. Their most recent title, The Complete Hawaiian Reef Fish Coloring Book is not only printed on recycled paper but also teaches readers about the importance of conservation. Scientists Call for a Worldwide System of Marine Reserves on World Oceans Day
Worldwide (June 8th, 2010)

More than 245 marine scientists from 35 countries are calling for the establishment of a worldwide system of very large, highly protected marine reserves as an essential and long overdue contribution to improving stewardship of the global oceanic environment.

While small marine reserves are known to protect some species, large reserves comparable to large national parks on land are necessary to better protect sea life in our oceans, which cover 71% of the planet.

By signing the statement, the experts endorsed the scientific case for designating very large, highly protected marine reserves and called on policymakers to take bolder action in establishing these areas. The statement issued by Global Ocean Legacy, a project of the Pew Environment Group, was released on Tuesday for World Oceans Day.

The need to set aside more and larger marine reserves as one means of ensuring the continued health of our oceans is well accepted among marine scientists, said Dr. Bernard Salvat, noted coral reef scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Paris' Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). We have to work on very large trans-boundary marine protected areas with intergovernmental agreements. We now need to speak out to educate governments and the public about the crisis facing our oceans and the long term benefits of establishing large, no-take marine reserves.

Overfishing, pollution and climate change are adversely affecting the health of the world's oceans, and ultimately threatening the livelihoods, food security and economic development of millions of people. Very large reserves can help reduce these problems, according to a recently published book, The Unnatural History of the Sea, by Dr. Callum Roberts, who is with the UK University of York.

Less than 0.5 percent of the world's oceans are fully protected from extractive or destructive activities. Large, no-take marine reserves have been shown to blunt the effects of excessive commercial fishing by offering a refuge for sea life to breed and spawn, providing for healthier fisheries as the fish swim into surrounding areas, and thus ensuring more resilient coastal economies. Because the ecosystems in ocean reserves are healthier, they are also more resistant to the damage caused by pollution, climate change and a wide range of other development activities.

More than a century after nations had the foresight to protect important landscapes like Yellowstone National Park in the United States and Kruger National Park in South Africa, they have just begun to turn their attention to protecting similarly significant places in the sea, said Jay Nelson, director of Global Ocean Legacy. The world's leaders need to recognize what more than 245 marine scientists from across the world understand: that the designation of very large, highly protected marine reserves is critical to maintaining the health of the ocean environment.

Global Ocean Legacy, a project of the Pew Environment Group in partnership with the Oak Foundation, Lyda Hill, the Robertson Foundation and the Sandler Foundation, strives to protect and preserve Earth's most important and unspoiled oceanic ecosystems. Its goal is to work with local citizens and governments to secure the designation of a handful of world class, no-take reserves that will provide ecosystem scale benefits and help conserve the global marine heritage.
