Outreach Tips – How to Help Spread the Word

You can help us make this World Ocean Day the most successful yet by simply spreading the world. Here are some tips for getting people fired up about World Ocean Day in your community!

For organizations

  • Display the World Ocean Day promotional poster and event flyer at your organization and distribute the action poster or brochure to visitors at your entrance, exit or gift shop.
  • Create a widget for World Ocean Day on your homepage and link to information about your event and the World Ocean Day website.
  • Submit the World Ocean Day press release highlighting your event to a local newspaper or radio station.
  • Create a fun onsite World Ocean Day display addressing an issue connected to this year's theme "helping our climate – helping our ocean," with the action brochure and Seas the Day bookmarks available as a take-away.
  • Host a news conference on World Ocean Day to publicize your events and highlight things people can do individually to help conserve the ocean for the future.
  • Advertise! Put the World Ocean Day logo on posters, t-shirts, everything! Contact us if you are interested in using the logo.
  • Have docents, tour guides, and other staff mention World Ocean Day to visitors.
  • Sign your organization's name on international WOD petition to the United Nations encouraging them to officially designate World Ocean Day on June 8th each year!
  • Download a hard copy of the World Ocean Day petition and have it open for signing in the weeks leading up to World Ocean Day and at your World Ocean Day event.

For individuals

  • Use the sample letter provided to write a letter to your local newspaper editor promoting World Ocean Day.
  • Use the sample letter provided to write a letter to your local representative asking them to take action to make World Ocean Day an official celebration in your town or country. Read Hawaii's success story!
  • Distribute the World Ocean Day promotional poster at local libraries, schools, beaches, parks, community bulletin boards, other public areas, and your work place.
  • Post the World Ocean Day logo, a call to celebration, and a link to the website on your social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.
  • Request to hear the Song for the Ocean on your local radio station.
  • Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about World Ocean Day.
